Singapore-based Maxeon Solar Technologies Ltd (NASDAQ:MAXN) has cut the ribbon on a recently expanded and renovated manufacturing plant in Mexico that now has an annual production capacity of 1.8 GW.
The company, which manufactures Maxeon and SunPower-branded solar panels, said in a statement that it spent some USD 70 million (EUR 64m) on the upgrade of the Mexicali plant in the state of Baja California. This brings the total sum invested in local solar production to more than USD 260 million, it added.
The ribbon-cutting event was held on Monday and was attended by the Governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda.
In Mexicali, Maxeon Solar makes its shingled-cell Performance line modules. The company owns a second factory in Ensenada, Baja California, for a combined production capacity of more than 2.5 GW. It employs more than 2,000 people at the two sites.
