Sustainability isn’t just net zero say small firms

Sustainability is no longer just about cutting carbon emissions—it is about transforming how businesses operate.

Novuna Business Finance’s latest report, Beyond Net Zero: A Broader Sustainability Agenda for Small Businesses, explores how three small enterprises are embedding sustainability into their core strategies, proving that responsible business can align with commercial success.

The report, alongside new research, reveals that 88% of small businesses now view sustainability as more important than a year ago.

While energy efficiency remains a priority, many are also focusing on water conservation, heating systems, and renewable energy solutions.

Tierra Viva, a family-run olive oil producer in Spain, has adopted regenerative farming, prioritising soil health and biodiversity. Philippine Mignot, Director, says: “We know we’re not alone in this. There are so many small farmers who want to make a change but don’t know where to start.”

The Remnant Revolution, founded by Pinky Laing, transforms discarded luxury textiles into unique homeware pieces while empowering women through sewing skills. “We work with what’s already available. It’s not about mass production or seasonal trends—it’s about making something beautiful, sustainable, and meaningful,” says Laing.

Oxford Information Labs demonstrates that sustainability extends beyond environmental efforts. Director Mark Robertshaw highlights how investing in people fosters resilience and long-term growth.

Jo Morris, Head of Insight at Novuna Business Finance, says these stories reveal a growing trend: “Sustainability is most effective when embedded into a business’s strategy rather than treated as an add-on.”
