10,500 Tesla Powerwall 2 batteries recalled due to fire risk

Tesla has recalled over 10,500 Powerwall 2 units due to fire risks. The affected Powerwall 2 batteries were sold between November 2020 and December 2022.

Affected Powerwall 2 customers will see this in the Tesla app.

Tesla has received 22 reports of overheating, including six reports of smoking and five reports of fire resulting in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported. The lithium battery cells in certain Powerwall 2 systems stop functioning during normal use, resulting in overheating and thermal runaway. Tesla issued the recall with the remedy to replace the 10,500 units.

Customers are asked to ensure their Powerwall 2 systems are online and check the Tesla app for a notification about whether their energy storage system is included in the recall. Tesla said it has remotely discharged affected Powerwall 2 systems to prevent overheating until a replacement is installed. Every affected Powerwall 2 unit will be removed and replaced at no cost to customers.
