50+ House Republicans ask Commerce to halt Chinese solar inverter imports

On Nov. 14, more than 50 House Republicans in the conservative caucus sent a letter to Dept. of Commerce Sec. Howard Lutnick asking the department to halt the import of Chinese solar inverters. The Republicans expressed concern stemming from a May 2025 Reuters report that found rogue communication devices not listed in product documents in some Chinese solar inverters.

“The integration of critical grid technologies, such as utility-scale solar and battery inverters, sourced from foreign entities of concern pose unacceptable national security, economic and supply chain risks,” the letter reads.

New Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) rules expected to roll out next year will prevent developers seeking federal tax incentives from using much China-sourced equipment anyway, but smaller, non-ITC projects could still opt for it.

A number of inverter manufacturers have set up U.S. manufacturing operations in the past few years. See Solar Power World’s most recent updated list here.
