AI robots to slash wind farm repair costs by 97%

The National Robotarium has announced a project aimed at developing underwater robots capable of performing maintenance tasks for offshore wind farms.

The project, known as UNITE, focuses on creating artificial intelligence systems that enable these robots to operate autonomously in marine environments.

The collaboration involves Heriot-Watt University, Imperial College London, Fugro, and Frontier Robotics.

The project aims to reduce the need for large maintenance vessels, which could lead to a decrease in fuel consumption by up to 97% and enhance safety by minimising human involvement in offshore operations.

The robots will be designed to conduct various maintenance tasks, such as taking measurements, performing inspections, cleaning structures, and repairing defects.

A challenge for the project is stabilising the robot’s arm or tool against a structure while dealing with strong currents and waves.

Advanced control systems and machine learning algorithms will help robots adapt to changing conditions.
