Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset will benefit from over £2.7 million in green investment aimed at reducing the centre’s carbon dioxide emissions.
North Somerset Council secured a grant of £2,344,518 from the UK Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) for various energy efficiency measures at the leisure centre.
The PSDS funding will replace six gas-powered boilers with air source heat pumps, eliminating reliance on gas to heat the centre’s facilities, including two swimming pools.
Additional upgrades include improved insulation and new windows, leading to an estimated annual saving of 340 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Owned by North Somerset Council and operated by Parkwood Leisure, Hutton Moor Leisure Centre will also see the installation of solar PV panels through separate funding from Sport England, further reducing energy costs.
Councillor Annemieke Waite, North Somerset Council’s executive member for climate, said: “We have made a commitment to be a net zero carbon emissions council and area by 2030 and I am so pleased we will be replacing the outdated fossil fuel boilers at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre.”
