Cables begin for 1.4GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm

Construction has begun at RWE‘s Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, a massive 1.4GW project.

It involves installing undersea cables from the UK’s northeast coast to the Dogger Bank in the North Sea.

Prysmian, the cable contractor, is using its Leonardo da Vinci vessel to lay the first high-voltage direct current export cable.

This cable will transport renewable electricity generated by the wind farm back to the UK.

The Sofia project represents a £3 billion investment in the UK’s energy infrastructure by RWE.

The wind farm will feature 100 Siemens Gamesa offshore wind turbines and is set to finish construction by the end of 2026.

Notably, 44 out of the 100 turbines will feature recyclable blades.

The project is predicted to produce enough energy to power more than 1.2 million homes.
