First hybrid electricity interconnector planned

The Dutch and Brits will soon be connected by a hybrid interconnector which can offer renewable power across both nations grids.

LionLink, a joint venture by TenneT and UK’s National Grid Ventures (NGV), has two roles.

It will deliver offshore wind power from Nederwiek 3 (windfarm) to shore and serve as a high-voltage link between the Dutch and UK grids. This boosts electricity exchange and grid resilience for both nations.

Marco Kuijpers, Director of Large Projects Offshore at TenneT said: “The hybrid interconnector between the Netherlands and the UK ensures improved security of supply, higher cable utilisation rates and efficient use of space in the North Sea. It also fosters energy market competition, benefiting both consumers and industry.”

The link should be running by2032.
