In response to the recent announcement by Ofgem granting clearance for three energy suppliers to resume forced Prepayment Meter (PPM) installations, EDF has issued a statement emphasising the importance of restarting processes.
The company asserts that the restart will be conducted under strict supervision from the regulator, with the primary goal of assisting individual customers in overcoming debt challenges and protecting all customers from additional charges.
A spokesperson for EDF said: “We have a duty to keep bills as low as possible, especially given customers are struggling, and rising debt levels are leading to all households facing bigger bills.
“It is important to restart, under strict supervision from the regulator, processes that help individual customers get out of debt and protect all customers from additional charges.
“Smart Pay As You Go meters provide the cheapest rates, without needing to visit a shop to top-up, and enable us to provide support quickly if customers run into difficulty.”
Citizens Advice has documented a noteworthy rise in instances of self-disconnections from PPMs.
The figures reveal nearly 22,000 cases of self-disconnection in the past year, marking a substantial 657% increase compared to the previous year’s count of just over 2,900 incidents.
