Green energy for Barbados with new hybrid system

A new project that involves the development of a hybrid system that will provide clean electricity to Barbados has been launched.

The Renewstable Barbados (RSB) initiative between the EU, Barbados and French firms HDF Energy and Rubis aims to integrate solar power with onsite green hydrogen storage.

Around 95% of the electricity in Barbados is said to be generated from imported fossil fuels but the government has set a 100% renewable energy target by 2030.

The latest project, which will supply clean power to more than 16,000 customers and cut emissions by 48,000 tons per year, will support the renewable goal.

Imports are also expected to be reduced by around 13 million litres of fuel per year.

The EU has accompanied the project from its inception, providing crucial assistance in developing the business case and finding financiers.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is working alongside the project to offer a combination of guarantees and investment grants.
