Greener world thanks to AI?

Artificial intelligence is no longer confined to the realms of science fiction. It has quietly embedded itself into everyday life, so can it help much more in tackling climate change and sustainability?

AI is starting to play a l role in climate monitoring. The Global Forest Watch, in partnership with Google Earth Engine, uses AI to track deforestation in near real-time.

In 2020, it detected 12 million hectares of tree loss, with an accuracy rate of 90%. Similarly, AI models are monitoring coral reef health, identifying bleaching and stress indicators with unprecedented precision.

In urban planning, AI-driven smart grids are optimising energy use. Siemens has deployed AI-powered systems in Berlin and Milan to reduce waste, while Singapore’s JTC has cut energy costs by 15% using Microsoft’s AI-powered cloud.

Given that buildings account for 40% of global energy consumption, scaling such innovations could significantly cut emissions.

AI is also making waves in recycling. AMP Robotics has developed AI-powered robots that sort waste with 95% accuracy, reducing landfill dependency.

In agriculture, precision farming techniques powered by AI have been shown to cut water and fertiliser use by up to 40%, reducing environmental impact while improving crop yields.

The potential of AI to drive sustainability is vast, but scaling its impact requires regulatory support.

As businesses navigate AI adoption, ethical frameworks could ensure its responsible use.

The key question remains: can AI’s role in environmental stewardship be expanded to achieve large-scale, lasting impact?
