Groundbreaking energy storage system goes live

A first-of-its-kind battery energy storage system, is now operational at Blackhillock, Scotland. The 200MW) / 400MWh system, is the largest of its kind in Europe, marking a major step towards a stable, renewable-powered grid.

Delivered by Wärtsilä for Zenobē, it is part of the Network Options Assessment (NOA) Stability Pathfinder programme, an initiative by National Grid Electricity System Operator (NESO) to enhance grid stability as the UK phases out fossil fuel plants.

The system will provide synthetic inertia and short-circuit level services, essential for integrating renewables and maintaining grid efficiency.

The Blackhillock site will integrate offshore wind power from three North Sea wind farms, easing grid congestion and preventing 2.6 million tonnes of COâ‚‚ emissions over the next 15 years.

It is expected to save UK consumers over £170 million by optimising renewable power use.
