Homeowners call for independent vote after hydrogen village trial cancellation

Residents in the Yorkshire town of Redcar are urging for an independent vote on hydrogen heating trials after a change in the proposed location.

The trials, initially planned for Whitby in Ellesmere Port, were called off due to local protests. Redcar has now become the sole remaining candidate for the trial.

The initiative, proposed by Northern Gas Networks (NGN), aims to replace home gas supplies with hydrogen and demonstrate the potential for repurposing existing gas networks for renewable energy.

Concerned homeowners have written a letter to the government, emphasising the lack of substantial local support and calling for an open debate with independent experts.

They are seeking unbiased information to make informed decisions on whether the trials should proceed.

The Redcar and Cleveland Hydrogen Trial Group highlighted the need for independent advice and expressed doubts about the role of hydrogen in net zero home heating.

According to a spokesperson from NGN, the consultations in Redcar lasted for over 10 months. As part of this process, an independent survey was conducted, revealing that 95% of residents and landlords expressed a “positive or neutral” sentiment towards NGN’s proposal.

Furthermore, a public meeting, facilitated by an independent research company, took place, and the feedback gathered during this meeting was included in the proposal submitted to the government.

To address any questions or concerns, individuals have been encouraged to engage with a dedicated team at the “Hydrogen Hub” located on the high street of the town.

The spokesperson acknowledged the potential apprehensions surrounding the transition to hydrogen and electricity, stating, “We fully comprehend that there may be concerns about the shift to hydrogen and electricity.”

ELN has reached out to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for comment.
