Enfinium’s Skelton Grange energy-from-waste facility in Leeds has taken a major step towards becoming fully operational in 2025 by receiving its first delivery of unrecyclable waste.
Around 200 tonnes of material, sourced from six different suppliers, arrived on-site, marking a significant milestone in the project’s journey.
Once fully operational, Skelton Grange will have the capacity to divert up to 410,000 tonnes of unrecyclable waste from high-emissions landfill every year.
The process will generate up to 49MW of electricity, sufficient to power more than 100,000 UK homes.
By reducing dependency on landfill, the facility will play a critical role in advancing both the circular economy and the UK’s decarbonisation efforts.
The development of Skelton Grange has already provided the local economy with a boost of £500 million, creating more than 400 jobs during construction. When the facility is up and running, it will deliver 40 high-quality full-time roles, further supporting the region’s employment market.
In February, the Aire Valley Heat and Power Network project received £19.5 million from the Government’s Green Heat Network Fund.
This innovative scheme will harness waste heat from Skelton Grange to provide a reliable, low-carbon source of heating in Leeds.
The collaboration is set to benefit local communities and demonstrates how energy-from-waste projects can serve as multifaceted solutions for modern urban environments.
Dan James, Plant Manager for Skelton Grange, emphasised the facility’s importance, stating: “Energy from waste facilities play an incredibly important role in contributing to a circular economy. Our Skelton Grange site… will transform our unrecyclable waste into electricity to power local homes and businesses for decades to come.”
