Major UK offshore wind farm moves forward

The Planning Inspectorate has formally accepted the application for examination for the Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm project.

Led by RWE on behalf of a consortium, including ESB and Sumitomo Corporation, the project aims to generate renewable energy equivalent to powering hundreds of thousands of homes.

The proposed Five Estuaries project is an extension to the existing Galloper Offshore Wind Farm, spanning two separate seabed areas in the southern North Sea, covering 128 km2.

With up to 79 turbines reaching a maximum height of 399 metres, it aims to generate enough energy annually to power hundreds of thousands of homes.

The wind farm would be situated approximately 37 kilometres off the coast of south Suffolk, with cables running underground for approximately 22 kilometres to a new substation west of Little Bromley.
