New Mexico outdoor education organization adds solar + EV charging to basecamp

Cottonwood Gulch Expeditions, a nonprofit educational organization in New Mexico, announced a continued partnership with Everybody Solar for the installation of a new 10.08-kW solar array and electric vehicle charging station at its historic basecamp.

Building on the successful 2019 collaboration, which brought 8.85 kW of solar energy and powered more than 17,000 pounds of direct carbon savings, this new solar project will reduce electricity expenses while deepening Cottonwood Gulch’s longstanding commitment to sustainability and hands-on learning. The investment not only brings environmental benefits but also serves as a vital educational tool for students engaging in the organization’s immersive outdoor programs.

“We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Everybody Solar, whose support helps bring our vision of sustainable, outdoor education to life,” said Jordan Stone, executive director of Cottonwood Gulch Expeditions. “By integrating solar power and EV infrastructure into our campus, we are investing in the health of our community, the future of our environment and the education of every young person who comes through our programs. Together, we’re sparking curiosity and responsibility — qualities those students will carry into the world as environmental stewards.”

Cottonwood Gulch works closely with local schools and families to bridge the access gap in outdoor and environmental education, ensuring children from all backgrounds can develop a strong, personal connection to nature. The new solar installation will allow the organization to redirect savings from reduced energy costs into capital projects and scholarships, increasing access and impact for under-resourced youth.
