A new STEM careers guide has been launched to help school careers leaders inspire students to pursue careers in engineering and technology – sectors forecast to grow faster than any other by 2030.
Titled Advancing STEM careers provision in schools, the free guide offers practical strategies and tips grounded in the latest research.
It is designed to help careers leads showcase the wide range of roles and entry routes into engineering and technology, which together employ around 6.3 million people in the UK.
Rebecca Healy, Careers Inspiration Manager at EngineeringUK, said, “The guide acts as the latest digest of current research about what works to increase young people’s awareness and inspiration about STEM careers, saves time and helps career leads bring to life the dynamic world of STEM.”
She added, “Engineering and technology careers span every sector, from sport to space. Engineers play a key role in improving sustainability and achieving net zero and they’re in demand at all levels, from apprentices to technicians, graduates to postgraduates.”
Developed by EUK Education’s Careers Working Group, the guide aligns with the Gatsby Benchmarks and the Careers Education Standard in Scotland. Contributors include experts from secondary schools, STEM Learning, UCL Engineering, the Royal Academy of Engineering and major professional institutions.
Séan Harris of the Institution of Civil Engineers said, “We hope it provides practical, actionable guidance to help career leads elevate STEM careers both within the school curriculum and as part of a broader careers education programme.”
