Ofgem consults on future energy price controls

OfgemĀ has initiated a consultation to determine the electricity transmission and gas network price controls for the 2026-2031 period.

The consultation follows key initiatives in autumn to transform the electricity grid, including national and regional energy planning through the independent Future System Operator, accelerated investment in new transmission lines and expedited connections for cleaner and more affordable power.

The consultation seeks feedback on potential future uses of hydrogen and carbon capture in the energy system.

Steven McMahon, Ofgemā€™s Interim Director for Network Price Controls, said: ā€œ2026-2031 is a critical five-year period in hitting the targets for a clean power system by 2035 and net zero overall by 2050.

ā€œOur job is to ensure our network regulation can inject the significant investment needed to deliver cleaner, cheaper, and more secure energy and accelerate network build.

ā€œIt needs to improve resilience to climate and cyber risks, maintain high standards of network services while keeping the overall costs of the transition to net zero low for consumers through their bills.ā€
