Ofgem greenlights £600m electricity network upgrade

Ofgem has approved the Argyll and Kintyre 275kV Reinforcement Strategy (Argyll) project, proposed by Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN).

The project, estimated to cost approximately £600 million, is a significant step in accommodating the growing renewable energy generation in the region, ensuring a secure supply.

Ofgem’s approval is in line with the RIIO-2 price control arrangements and their assessment of the project’s need under the Large Onshore Transmission Investment mechanism.

Ofgem’s assessment of the Final Needs Case for the Argyll project has led to the conclusion that there is a compelling need for network enhancements, primarily to accommodate the anticipated surge in renewable energy.

They found SSEN’s cost-benefit analysis to be robust and supportive of the project.

Rob McDonald, Managing Director of SSEN Transmission, said: “The Argyll and Kintyre 275kV strategy is required to connect several new onshore wind farms across the region and to transport that power to demand centres across the north of Scotland and beyond, helping secure energy independence and net zero.

“This investment will also create hundreds of skilled jobs throughout the supply chain, boosting local and national economies.

“With all substation planning approvals in place, we now look forward to the determination of our overhead line projects and remain committed to working constructively with all stakeholders to ensure the timely delivery of this critical local and national infrastructure.”
