A British technology company is helping farmers turn agricultural waste into a new source of revenue, by using renewable energy generated from pig slurry to power artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Easy Compute, through its Green Compute network, installs and operates AI computing hardware on farms that produce renewable energy on-site. The first project, located in north-west England, uses electricity generated from pig slurry through anaerobic digestion to run high-performance computers used for AI workloads.
The model allows farmers to earn significantly more from their renewable energy than by exporting it to the grid.
According to Easy Compute, electricity sold to the grid typically generates between 8p and 12p per kilowatt-hour, while using that same energy to power AI computing can generate up to ten times more value.
The company says this increase in revenue can reduce the return-on-investment period for anaerobic digesters and related equipment from around 12 to 15 years to approximately four years.
Some of the network’s largest farm partners are already generating tens of thousands of pounds per month through computing activities, creating an additional income stream alongside traditional farming operations.
Green Compute also connects farm-based computing infrastructure to decentralised AI networks, including Bittensor. This enables farms to earn cryptocurrency rewards in the form of TAO tokens for contributing computing power, alongside income from commercial customers renting processing capacity.
The approach is designed to ensure hardware remains productive even when business demand is lower, with systems automatically switching to cryptocurrency-generating activities when spare capacity is available.
The company argues that the model offers a lower-carbon alternative to traditional AI data centres, which have faced growing scrutiny over their energy consumption.
Josh Riddett, CEO of Easy Compute and Green Compute, said: “The best clean AI on the market is quite literally running on pig muck. We take waste that a farm already has, turn it into clean power, and point that power at the computers the AI industry is desperate for.”
He added: “The farmer earns far more than they would from the grid – and now they can earn cryptocurrency on top, through networks like Bittensor. The AI runs on genuinely green energy rather than an offset bought after the event.”
