Renewables dominate US new generating capacity in 2024

Renewable energy sources dominated new US generating capacity in 2024, with data from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) revealing they accounted for nearly all additions.

Solar power, in particular, led the way for the eighth consecutive month, contributing significantly to the nation’s energy.

According to FERC’s monthly “Energy Infrastructure Update,” April saw renewables, including biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, and wind, provide 99.2% of new capacity.

Solar alone added 1,324MW, with wind contributing an additional 737MW.

In the first four months of the year, solar and wind combined added 7,899MW and 1,825MW, respectively, making up 99.2% of new capacity.

This underscores a continued shift towards cleaner energy sources, with renewables now constituting nearly 30% of total US generating capacity.
