Robots take over Scottish network monitoring

Seven new inspection robots are being deployed across SSEN Transmission’s high-voltage direct current (HVDC) stations in northern Scotland as part of efforts to modernise network monitoring.

The robots will operate at Blackhillock, Spittal and Kergord HVDC converter stations, as well as Noss Head DC Switching Station in Wick. They will carry out autonomous inspections and monitor electrical equipment, providing operational teams with regular data on asset condition.

The robots are expected to complete more than 5,000 autonomous inspections and travel over 1,700 kilometres during the next year.

Alan Ritchie, Senior Manager of Innovation at SSEN Transmission, said: “It’s been fantastic to see the robots successfully deployed at scale and already providing valuable insights from areas that would otherwise be difficult to access when assets are in operation.

“The information they’re gathering is helping us better understand the condition of our assets, make more informed decisions and continue building a safe, reliable and resilient network for the future.”

The technology has also captured thermal and ultraviolet images from energised HVDC halls, helping engineers identify potential faults earlier and make more informed maintenance decisions.

The rollout follows three years of collaboration between SSEN Transmission and technology company Ross Robotics. It builds on the successful operation of an existing robot, taking the company’s fleet to eight.

SSEN Transmission said the deployment marks a move from innovation trials towards routine use of robotics across its network.
