Sellafield nuclear site faces investigation

The National Audit Office (NAO) has initiated an inquiry into Sellafield, the UK’s primary nuclear waste repository located in Cumbria.

The investigation aims to assess the management of risks and expenses associated with the site’s nuclear legacy.

Sellafield, responsible for storing and treating nuclear waste from various sources, currently houses around 81,000 tonnes of radioactive waste, with estimates suggesting this figure will rise to 3.3 million tonnes in the coming years.

Many buildings at Sellafield weren’t designed with decommissioning in mind, making cleanup a long term task expected to cost £84 billion, though this estimate is uncertain.
