Seven energy-saving steps to cut utility costs

New research shows that 3 in 5 business owners in 2025 are feeling stressed about rising utility costs.

With no energy price cap for businesses, many SMEs are under intense pressure, but there are actionable steps companies can take to reduce usage and cut bills says consultancy Utility Bidder.

Chris Shaw, CEO, said: “Unlike consumers, UK businesses don’t have the safety net of an energy price cap, which has, sadly, meant that many small businesses have had to close their doors.”

He added: “There are simple changes that can be made, such as switching from incandescent bulbs to LED, which use 75% less energy, and turning off non-essential equipment.”

One of the most effective steps is to switch providers and lock in the best rate before contracts auto-renew. Businesses should also consider whether a fixed or variable tariff best suits their needs. Conducting an energy audit can identify areas of waste, especially useful for businesses operating across multiple sites.

Installing solar panels and other renewable technologies has become more accessible and cost-effective, while energy monitors offer insight into usage and carbon emissions.

Old appliances are another hidden cost. Replacing outdated office equipment with modern, efficient alternatives can yield long-term savings.

Businesses are also encouraged to educate employees on switching off unused devices.

Improving HVAC efficiency is crucial, particularly in winter. Smart thermostats, regular system cleaning and sealing heat loss points all help reduce energy waste.

Lastly, switching to LED lighting can cut lighting energy usage by 75%.
