SSE Renewables to construct battery storage at Fiddler’s Ferry

SSE Renewables has greenlit the construction of a 150MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project at the site of the former Fiddler’s Ferry coal-fired power station in Warrington, Cheshire.

The 150MW/300MWh grid-scale battery marks SSE Renewables’ fourth BESS project to receive a final investment decision, bringing the cumulative megawatts in battery storage projects under construction to 670MW.

Formerly owned and operated by SSE, the Fiddler’s Ferry power station was decommissioned in March 2020, and its cooling towers were recently demolished.

The new battery storage project will capitalise on the existing grid connection infrastructure already in place.

Once completed, the Fiddler’s Ferry battery storage facility will have a capacity to operate for up to two hours, providing essential support during periods of peak energy demand.
