The UK must more than double its current rate of installing publicly accessible electric vehicle (EV) charge points to meet its 2030 target.
Britain aims to have 300,000 charge points by the end of the decade but had only 75,074 as of March 2024.
That’s according to new analysis from Cornwall Insight, which suggests that from April 2023 to March 2024, the UK installed 16,061 new charge points, averaging just over 1,300 per month.
At this pace, the UK would miss its target by nearly 120,000 charge points.
To stay on track, the installation rate needs to increase to 2,800 charge points per month, according to the report.
Despite the government‘s decision to delay the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030 to 2035, the charge point installation target remains unchanged.
Delays to programmes, including the Rapid Charging Fund, have slowed the rollout.
The fund, intended to develop ultra rapid networks at strategic locations, faced several rescheduling issues before its eventual launch in December 2023.
Cornwall Insight’s Electric Vehicle Country Attractiveness Index, which ranks European countries based on their investment appeal for EVs, currently places the UK in 9th position.
The UK trails behind countries such as the Netherlands, Norway and France, with the Netherlands holding the top spot.
