The UK will support Ukraine’s energy security by offering a £192 million loan guarantee for the supply of nuclear fuel.
This comes as Grant Shapps, the Energy Security Secretary, visited Kyiv to meet with senior Ukrainian government ministers and energy industry leaders.
The UK’s action is aimed at aiding Ukraine in powering through the upcoming winter and reducing its reliance on Russian fuel supplies.
Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has faced challenges due to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Nuclear power constitutes more than half of the country’s electricity generation.
The UK’s loan guarantee, provided through the UK Export Finance, will assist UK-based company Urenco in supplying uranium enrichment services to Ukraine’s national nuclear company, Energoatom.
Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps said: “Our support for Ukraine is unwavering in the face of Putin’s barbaric invasion – the UK continues to stand with Ukraine as they repel Russian attacks and rebuild their country.
“Being here on the ground, it’s truly remarkable witnessing first-hand the sheer courage, resolve and gritty determination of the Ukrainian people.”
