Vulnerable need more energy support

The British Gas Energy Trust supported  more than  64,000 households in 2023-24, providing energy advice, emergency fuel payments, white goods, and debt grants to help families manage rising costs.

With energy prices soaring and the price cap increasing, many households are struggling to keep their homes warm.

The situation has worsened so much the Trust has opened two funds—the Individuals and Families Fund and the Energy Support Fund—offering grants of up to £2,000 for customers across England, Scotland, and Wales, including non-British Gas customers.

One recipient, “Ms N”, faced impossible choices between paying energy bills and meeting basic family needs. With guidance from StepChange, Ms N received a £995 grant, helping her regain financial control and provide a warm, healthy home for her family.

These grants are a lifeline for families battling energy debt. They alleviate immediate pressures while preventing the harsh realities of disconnection or self-rationing during these colder months.

Jessica Taplin, CEO of the Trust, urges those struggling to reach out for help: “The Trust’s support funds are there to help individuals with energy debt. Share this information with friends and family—no one should navigate these times alone.”
