Ynys Môn MP Llinos Medi has urged the UK Government to take swift and decisive action to advance nuclear development at the Wylfa site, calling the project “a no-brainer.”
The Wylfa site has played a key role in Anglesey’s energy history, hosting two Magnox reactors that were decommissioned in 2015.
Despite multiple proposals to build new nuclear capacity on the site, including from RWE, E.ON and Hitachi, none have come to fruition, leaving local communities waiting for investment and jobs.
In her remarks, Medi criticised the Government’s rejection of her amendment to the Great British Energy Bill, which aimed to include nuclear energy under the remit of the new public body.
She also raised concerns about the decision to remove Wylfa from the list of preferred nuclear sites in the national policy statement, warning it could create uncertainty for potential developers.
“If the Government are serious about generating growth, they must surely see that developing a site at Wylfa is a no-brainer,” she said. “It would provide a reliable, clean source of power that could last for up to 80 years, strengthening our energy security.”
With the deadline approaching for the selection of small modular reactor developers, Medi stressed the need for urgency to avoid losing critical supply chains.
She called on the Government to reinstate Wylfa as a preferred site and provide clarity on the role of Great British Energy in supporting nuclear development.
Labour and Conservative MPs expressed support for Medi’s efforts, acknowledging the importance of Wylfa in the UK’s clean energy strategy.
