NextEra Energy Resources will acquire a 49% stake in Chesapeake Utilities’ planned $1.2 billion Florida Energy Pathway natural gas pipeline, a 24-inch system extending from Palm Beach County to Miami-Dade County.
(P&GJ) — Chesapeake Utilities Corporation has sold a 49% ownership interest in its planned $1.2-billion Florida Energy Pathway natural gas infrastructure project to NextEra Energy Resources, bringing a new partner into the proposed South Florida transmission system.
Under the agreement, Chesapeake Utilities subsidiary Peninsula Pipeline Holdings will retain a 51% interest in the project, while NextEra Energy Resources will hold the remaining 49%. Chesapeake subsidiary Peninsula Pipeline Company will construct, manage and operate the system.
Florida Energy Pathway is planned as a 24-inch intrastate natural gas infrastructure project extending from Palm Beach County to Miami-Dade County. The project is designed to increase natural gas transportation capacity, address regional supply constraints and support growing energy demand in South Florida.
Total investment is estimated at approximately $1.2 billion, subject to final design and development activities.
“Since announcing the project in July, we have received strong interest from potential partners, reinforcing the value of this regulated infrastructure opportunity,” Chesapeake Utilities President and CEO Jeff Householder said.
Development work is underway, including engineering, environmental studies and stakeholder engagement. Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2028, with the project targeted to enter service in 2030 following final commissioning.
Chesapeake Utilities first announced Florida Energy Pathway in July as part of its plans to expand natural gas infrastructure serving South Florida.
