Another drought permit granted as heatwave effects continue

A drought permit has been granted to a reservoir in Exmoor, which is currently holding 18% capacity, as opposed to its expected level of 30%

The permit means that Wimbleball Reservoir’s water storage can be supported by pausing flow to an external river nearby.

The surrounding area, supplied by South West Water, is still under a drought plan – as is currently 71.3% of England.

The National Drought Group and Environment agency are continuing weekly meetings to track and manage water levels and drought responses, in order to coordinate the response across the water sector.

Joanne Laeger, area drought manager of the Environment Agency, said: “Drought has not gone away with the arrival of autumn and the rain that would normally accompany the change in season. Steps must be taken to secure public water supply and we are keeping a close eye on the environment, ready to respond to signs of impact and distress.

“The goal is to get the most out of our water supplies and that means being extra careful in how we use it. This applies to everyone.”

The permit will remain in place until 28th February 2027 unless withdrawn, alongside other reservoirs in similar situations.
