The Met Office and the Office for Nuclear Regulation have agreed to work together on meteorological and climate services to support nuclear safety and emergency preparedness.
The agreement covers areas such as extreme weather and climate projection analysis. It will also provide training between both agencies and expert advice for the ONR’s assessments.
The organisations say it will also help ensure timely science-based decision-making within the country’s nuclear sector that protects public safety and strengthen national resilience.
Aidan Parkes, Principal Inspector for Nuclear Safety at ONR, said: “Our weather and climate intelligence will help ONR access and apply the latest science on weather, climate and external hazards within its regulatory activities, while ONR’s expertise will help us better understand how this information is interpreted and used to support nuclear safety.”
A report by the ONR in 2025 revealed the sector was making progress to ensure that climate change effects are understood and mitigated against but still highlighted further work was needed.
