If your teen or tween is gaming away for hours on end, can you choose a greener cheaper console? It appears so.
Analysis by Cases.gg has unveiled the energy consumption of popular gaming consoles, shedding light on how gamers can reduce emissions and save on energy costs. The study measured each console’s power usage across typical daily activities.
Leading the pack in energy efficiency is the Nintendo Switch OLED, using only 10,037.5 watt-hours annually and costing just £2.46 per year to run.
The standard Nintendo Switch follows closely, using 11,132.5 watt-hours yearly, with a running cost of £2.73.
Consoles such as the Microsoft Xbox One S and Xbox Series S, consume substantially more energy, costing £18.74 and £19.92 per year, respectively.
The Sony PlayStation 4 and 4 Pro, while delivering high-quality performance, have higher energy consumption and costs, with the PlayStation 5 topping the list as the least energy-efficient – it consumes a whopping 182,120.4 watt-hours annually, costing £44.62.
Gabriele Asaro, Head of Research at Cases.gg, commented: “With rising energy prices and increased gaming time during colder months, understanding a console’s energy consumption is crucial. Gamers can make informed decisions to save on bills and reduce their carbon footprint.”
By choosing more energy-efficient consoles, gamers can enjoy their favourite pastime while contributing to lower emissions and a more sustainable lifestyle. Just make sure they switch it off at night!
