Portugal shines bright with two new solar PV plants

Two new solar power plants that will supply 19,000 homes have just been completed in Portugal.

The plants in the Algarve, which have a capacity of 57GWh, have been created by Iberdrola and will save around 21 million tonnes of CO2 each year.

Unusually, the power plants have 64,000 bifacial panels – these are panels that can capture light from both the front and the back.

Alejandra Reyna, Managing Director of Iberdrola Portugal, said: “The completion of two additional PV plants represents an important milestone on the path to the decarbonisation of the economy, reinforcing the renewable energy production capacity in Portugal and contributing to socio-economic development, in line with national and global targets for reducing emissions and promoting energy autonomy.”

In addition to reducing emissions, Iberdrola aims to generate 200 jobs in the region.
