Drivers could save more than £1000 a year by switching to an electric vehicle and charging at home on a low-cost smart tariff.
Scottish Power is encouraging people to make the switch after a study revealed that 44% of drivers don’t know how much it costs to charge at home.
The study by Censuswide found that based on an average driving distance of about 7,400 miles per year, a typical petrol car could cost around £1,177 annually to fill up. Whereas a typical EV charged at home on a low-cost smart tariff could cost around £155 per year in electricity.
TV personality and architect George Clarke drives an EV and is encouraging the public to research the option.
He said: “There’s still plenty of confusion around EVs, particularly when it comes to charging costs, but the reality is often very different from what people expect. Before dismissing an EV, I’d encourage drivers to take a proper look at the numbers because the potential savings can be eye-opening.”
The findings also revealed that 38% of people worry that charging an EV could overload their home’s electric and 55% believe that the vehicles do not have sufficient range for longer journeys.
Despite growing numbers of EVs on the roads, the research still found that people do still question the expense of running them and the time they take to charge.
