Rolls-Royce provides battery storage for grid stability

Rolls-Royce is set to supply Encavis AG with an mtu battery energy storage system, featuring a 12-megawatt output and 24-megawatt storage capacity.

This system will aid the Hamburg-based electricity producer in trading electrical energy from German wind and solar parks, contributing to grid stabilisation and supply security.

Rolls-Royce will oversee the system’s supply, installation and maintenance, expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2025.

Additionally, Rolls-Royce has been contracted to provide construction services, installation and ten years of maintenance.

The system comprises a large-scale mtu EnergyPack QG storage system with 72 battery cabinets and the intelligent mtu EnergetIQ control platform, ensuring optimal performance and flexibility.

The battery energy storage system will be deployed at an Encavis plant in Hettstedt, Saxony-Anhalt, developed with the support of Stadtwerke Hettstedt.

It will be charged during periods of low electricity prices and discharge during high-price times by participating in the day-ahead and intra-day market.
